On November 4, 1794 the Russian forces led under General Aleksandr Suvorov assaulted Praga, the easternmost suburb of Warsaw and after four hours of heavy hand to hand fighting broke through defences of Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Praga was subsequently looted and burnt by Russian soldiers who also killed approximately 20 000 of its inhabitants including women and infants, even animals were not spared. Next day Warsaw surrendered. The Battle of Praga (known as Massacre of Praga) was the last battle of army of Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth (the Kingdom of Poland and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania). In the Battle of Praga Lithuanian soldiers wore their uniforms for the last time.

On 24 June 1812, the 450.000 men of the Napoleon's Grande Armée, the largest army assembled up to that point in European history, crossed the Neman River in the territory of Lithuania and headed towards Moscow – the French invasion of Russia began. It was the greatest and bloodiest of the Napoleonic campaigns, involving more than 1.5 million soldiers, with over 500.000 French and 400.000 Russian casualties.
