Vytis is translatable as Chase, Pursuer, Knight or Horseman, similar to the Slavic vityaz (Old East Slavic for brave, valiant warrior). Vytis is also known by other names in various languages, such as Waikymas, Pagaunė in the Lithuanian language or as Pogonia, Pogoń, Пагоня (romanized: Pahonia) in the Polish, and Belarusian languages. The ruling Gediminid dynasty first adopted the horseback knight as a dynastical symbol which depicted them. Later, in the early 15th century, Grand Duke Vytautas the Great made the mounted knight on a red field the coat of arms of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Ever since, the Lithuanian rulers and nobles related to the ruling dynasty used the coat of arms. The knight's shield was designed for decoration with the Columns of Gediminas or the Jagiellonian Double Cross.

Among the booty retrieved from the field at Grunwald were fifty-six flags of the Teutonic Order or cities affiliated with the Teutonic Order. The flags were brought to Kraków and hung in the cathedral to commemorate the victory. Those, or reproductions of them, hang today in Wawel Castle. It survives as a rich source for turn-of-the-15th-century Central Europe heraldic style.

In February 1797, he wrote: “You to whom nature has given spirit, sweetness, and beauty, you who alone can move and rule my heart, you who know all too well the absolute empire you exercise over it!”

On October 21, 1805, southwest of Spain’s Cape Trafalgar, the British fleet defeated a force of French and Spanish ships in the decisive naval battle of the Napoleonic War. Admiral Lord Horatio Nelson died of wounds aboard his flagship, HMS Victory.

Nelson felt the tension and the need for a final word. He said to Blackwood, who had been his most constant companion all the morning, “I will now amuse the fleet with a signal. Do you not think there is one yet wanting?” Blackwood said everyone seemed to know exactly what to do. Nelson thought for a moment, and then said, “Suppose we telegraph, ‘Nelson confides that every man will do his duty.’ ” Somebody suggested “England” instead of “Nelson,” and Nelson accepted the change with pleasure. With an air of boyish gaiety, he called the flag lieutenant: “Mr. Pasco, I wish to say to the fleet, ‘England confides that every man will do his duty.’ You must be quick, for I have one more to make, which is for close action.” Pasco asked to be allowed to use “expects” instead of “confides” because “expects” was in Popham’s signal book, but “confides” would have to be spelt. “That will do, Pasco, make it directly,” Nelson said. "England expects that every man will do his duty" – at 11:35 on October 21, 1805 the most famous battle signal ever made was hoisted to the yards and mastheads of the Victory.

Patron is a detection dog who works for the State Emergency Service of Ukraine. He is a Jack Russell Terrier. Patron was born on 20 July 2019. He was purchased as a puppy by Mykhailo "Misha" Iliev, a bomb disposal technician with the State Emergency Service of Ukraine. Patron first came to prominence during the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine. Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy awarded Patron the Order for Courage for his work in locating and defusing unexploded ordnance left behind by Russian troops.
