Originally formed in 1642 by King Charles, The Band of the Scots Guards has participated in major world conflicts for nearly three centuries. The distinctive sounds of bagpipes and brass, the high-spirited Scottish sword dances and regimental marching and of course the stately uniforms – a breathtaking grandeur feast for the eyes and ears – have escorted troops into many famous battles, including Ticonderoga, Waterloo, and even the Second Gulf War.
Three armies were involved in the Battle of Waterloo in 1815: a French army under the command of Napoleon Bonaparte;  an Anglo-led Allied army under the command of the Duke of Wellington, and a Prussian army under the command of Gebhard Leberecht von Blücher, Prince of Wahlstatt.

The Yeomen Warders, popularly known as the Beefeaters, are ceremonial guardians of the Tower of London. They were originally formed in 1485 by Henry VII, the first monarch of the Tudor dynasty. There are currently 37 Beefeaters at the Tower of London. The ruling Gediminid dynasty first adopted the horseback knight as a dynastical symbol which depicted them. Later, in the early 15th century, Grand Duke Vytautas the Great made the mounted knight on a red field the coat of arms of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Ever since, the Lithuanian rulers and nobles related to the ruling dynasty used the coat of arms. The knight's shield was designed for decoration with the Columns of Gediminas or the Jagiellonian Double Cross.

Zawisza Czarny (or Zawisza the Black) (1370–1428) was a Polish knight and nobleman who served as a commander and diplomat under Polish king Władysław II Jagiełło and Hungarian-Bohemian king Sigismund of Luxembourg. During his life, he was regarded as a model of knightly virtues and was renowned for winning multiple tournaments. His nickname is due to his black hair and his custom-made, black armor, which is kept at the Jasna Góra Monastery.
