Nearly 500 years before Christopher Columbus crossed the blue ocean, a Norse Viking by the name of Leif Eriksson landed on the North American continent. Eriksson is believed to be the first European to have landed on and established a settlement in North America around 1000 CE. Researchers aren’t sure exactly where Leif landed, but they believe it might have been at Labrador or Newfoundland, in Canada. Leif explored a region he called Vinland.
Today, we still ask ourselves, “Who really discovered America?”

On the year 1323 January 25th Gediminas, by the grace of God the king of Lithuania and Russia, ruler and duke of Ziemgala, in an open letter, in his words, "to all the worshipers of Christ, men and women, spread throughout the world, especially giving priority to the special cities of Lübeck, Stralsund, Bremen, Magdeburg, Cologne and others to even Rome", mentioned the name of Vilnius for the first time.
Letters of Gediminas to the laity had very specific economic goals: "...we open [our] land, estates and kingdom (terram, dominum et regnum) to every person of good will: soldiers (knights), armorers, merchants, farmers, blacksmiths, wheelwrights, cobblers, furriers, millers, innkeepers, any craftsmen. We want to divide the land among all these listed – each according to his rank. Those who would like to come as farmers can work our land for ten years free of charge. Merchants enter and exit without tax or duty and freely, after all barriers are gone. I will provide the soldiers and the men-at-arms, if they wish to stay, with things and property as is proper.
Wanting the message to be as widely spread as possible to the inhabitants of other cities, Gediminas asked "all the city councilors that this letter be rewritten, and that it is written down and pinned to the door of the church, and the letter itself, out of love for us, be forwarded to the neighboring city without any delay, so that God’s glory would introduce it to everyone." It is obvious that the king of Lithuania was well aware that the door of the church was an effective place for advertising and information transmission (the most famous example is the publication of Martin Luther's theses). Gediminas used the services of monks of orders preaching in the cities. THANK YOU to King Gediminas for Vilnius!

Make love, not war is an anti-war slogan commonly associated with the American counterculture of the 1960s. It was used primarily by those who were opposed to the Vietnam War, but has been invoked in other anti-war contexts since, around the world.

MARQUARD VON SALZBACH.

Marquard von Salzbach was a Teutonic knight, who played a significant role in shaping the relations between the Teutonic knights and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania in 1389-1410.
During the Lithuanian Civil War in 1381-1384 Vytautas, the Grand Duke of Lithuania, captured Marquard after Vytautas reconciled with his cousin Jogaila. At that time Marquard was a castellan of the Marienburg, the Teutonic castle on the Neman river. Marquard became a friend and a close advisor to Vytautas. Grand Duke of Lithuania sent Marquard on a diplomatic mission to form an Alliance with the Teutonic knights. Civil war broke out in Lithuania in 1389, Marquard came free and returned to the knights, becoming a castellan of Ragnit, respected by experts, because of his fluency in lithuanian and in-depth knowledge of the Lithuanian Royal court.
When Vytautas turned against the knights, Marquard fought against Lithuania in an attempt to conquer Samogitia. Marquard helped to negotiate peace in the Treaty of Salynas in 1398. In 1399 Marquard brought 1.600 cavalry to support Vytautas at the battle against the Golden Horde near the Vorskla river. The battle ended with a crushing defeat of the lithuanians, Vytautas barely managed to escape alive, only three Teutonic knights escaped with a few low-ranking soldiers.
In 1404 Marquard insulted Vytautas by attacking his murdered mother Birute. Personal conflict grew between the two, and was finally resolved during the 1410 battle of Grunwald, where Marquard participated as the commander of Brandenburg. According to Jan Dlugosz’ s notes in Banderia Prutenorum, Marquard was taken as a prisoner. Vytautas beheaded Marquard because he refused to apologize Vytautas for the insult.

A bit of history. The word TATTOO used in English comes from the Dutch saying "doe den tap toe" (eng. "it's time to turn off the taps"), which signifies as a signal to the owners of the taps and also as an invitation to the soldiers to return to the barracks after having fun in the city. Eventually, this sort of invitation for drummers and trumpeters to return to the barracks lost its direct meaning and became a festival of military bands. Such events became popular during the First and Second World Wars, and in the 20th century, they spread widely throughout Europe, Africa, Asia and the United States of America.
On the 31st of August 2023, Lithuania will commemorate the 30th anniversary of the withdrawal of the occupying Russian army from the territory of Lithuania. This historic anniversary is commemorated for the second time at an international event organized in Lithuania – NATO military orchestra festival MILITARY TATTOO LITHUANIA 2023. On the 26-27 of August 2023, military orchestras from the United States of America, Italy, Latvia, Poland, Lithuania, the Netherlands, France and Germany will present a unique spectacle in Vilnius, at the Cathedral Square. Specifically for this historic occasion, TYPOART has drawn and produced souvenirs.

Love Story of Napoléon & Joséphine de Beauharnais began in 1795. In a letter to her in December, Napoléon wrote, "I awake full of you. Your image and the memory of last night’s intoxicating pleasures has left no rest to my senses." In January 1796, Napoléon Bonaparte proposed to her and they married on 9 March. Until meeting Bonaparte, she was known as Rose, but Bonaparte preferred to call her Joséphine, the name she adopted from then on. Two days after the wedding, Bonaparte left to lead the French army in Italy. During their separation, he sent her many love letters. In February 1797, he wrote: “You to whom nature has given spirit, sweetness, and beauty, you who alone can move and rule my heart, you who know all too well the absolute empire you exercise over it!”
